Multi-national power engineering firm Trench has won a contract to supply and install the world’s highest voltage dry-type shunt reactor.

Trench will be supplying the world’s first 420 kV dry-type shunt reactor to a German Transmission System Operator. The unit is scheduled for delivery in March 2021.

While Trench say their technology allows them to produce dry-type shunt reactors at up to 550 kV voltage, this 420 kV unit will be the highest rated unit sold so far.

These modular units can be quicker to deliver and maintain, as well as being considered more environmentally-friendly that traditional transformers due to the lack of insulating oils being used.

Trench was acquired by Siemens in 2004 and is now part of the Siemens Transmission Products business.
