As discussed in EE Times in the article “The Humble Busbar Still Serves Today’s Power-Distribution,” modern systems are pushing the boundaries of electrical performance while facing increasing power demands. Although the power consumption of individual circuit components has dropped significantly, overall system power requirements have surged—driven by higher performance, functional density, and expanded capabilities.
While a typical equipment rack used to dissipate only a few kilowatts, current designs now require 10, 12, or even 15 kilowatts per rack—and future systems are projected to exceed that. Meanwhile, PC boards are also demanding more from their power infrastructure, with some requiring hundreds of amps to support advanced processors and data-handling capabilities.
